How To Dress For A Job Interview

Dressing for interview

Three months after I wrote my final papers at the college, I was a bit curious to secure myself a job,and fortunately for me I was invited for a job interview.

Since it was not a corporate company, and the interview was not held in an official venue, I decided to go for the interview with my t-shirt , jean trousers and sneakers.

When I went on to the interview, she said:'' why are you dressed like this, is it because this is not a corporate office?".

What does my story entail? It therefore means that how we dress for an interview plays a role in determining if we will secure the job or not.

Submitting curriculum vitae is not just enough to seal the deal, your performance during the interview session is what will justify your curriculum vitae (CV).

Now during a job interview session, there are lots of factors that are being considered to pass the final judgment.

One of these factors is your mode of dressing. How you appear in an interview, your composure matters a lot.

This entails that it is essential we dress properly for a job interview. But the question here is , how do we know we are dressing well for a job interview?

What are the things to consider when choosing our choice of outfit for a job interview?

Well, though there might be no standard, style or colour of dress you should dress for an interview, we will give you a general framework that will guide you , when next you dress for an interview.

How To Dress For Job Interview

How we dress points out a lot about us. Our personality, state of hygiene and how much we take care of ourselves can be determined through our mode of dressing.

Going for a job interview is a very sensitive meeting that you ought to be very careful and well prepared for, otherwise you miss the job.

Now below are things to consider while thinking on what to wear for a job interview.

  1. The company's brand
  2. Colour choice
  3. Neatness
  4. Colour blending
  5. Size
  6. Appear Smart

1.The Company's brand

The company's brand is their trademark . By brand I mean what makes the company unique and easily identified in the midst of many.

Branding involves the company's logo, colours , font and many other things that are uniquely related to the company.

It is important to have a foreknowledge of the company in which you are about to go for an interview.

As soon as you understand the brand, you will be able to know what they like and what they stand for and this will give you a clue on what and how to dress for the job interview.

2. Colour choice

You will fail in this aspect if you skip step 1 , which is understanding the branding of the company.

It is through your findings about the company's brand that you will be able to know their brand colours.

Now the trick here is to make your choice of colour match with their brand colours.

For example if green is part of the company's brand colour, you can nod a green tire, or maybe add a green pocket filler in your shirt.

Just ensure that there is a touch of their brand colour in your dressing , but it should be moderate and naturally fitted.

This means that you really understand the company and you wish to work for them.

Imagine if their competitor's brand colour is red , and you come for the interview with a red tie or shirt, it will look so odd and might cost you the Job.

3.Neatness

Have it at the back of your mind that your neatness will be looked upon.

Appearing so unkempt for a job interview will not just cost you the Job but a big blow to your personality.

Ensure to appear neat. Thoroughly watch the clothes you wish to wear, starch it if necessary and then iron it.

Another thing is for hair do. Ensure it is pleasant to behold.

4. Colour blending

This factor is very important if you don't want to be seen as a clown.

Now remember we talked about  the company's brand colour and how it should reflect a bit in your dressing.

The above consideration , doesn't mean you should go colour riot in your dressing, just to showcase the company's brand colour.

You will be laughed at if you try this. Always ensure that while you are trying to give a touch of the company's brand colour in your outfit, that the colour blends with other colors naturally.

For example a colour riot is wearing a green shirt , yellow tie and a red trouser. Obviously this looks so awkward.

Also note that it is not a must that all the brand colours appear in your outfit, you ain't trying to form a rainbow.

Even if none of the colours reflect your dressing, there is nothing wrong with that. The most important thing is to appear neat, simple and Smart.

5. Size

When you are dressing for a job interview, always ensure you go for your size.

Do not wear an outfit that is too tight to the extent of exposing your body part or underwear.

And at the same time do not go for oversize clothes. Make sure you put on your size and what best fits you .

6. Appear Smart

Finally ensure to appear smart with the right choice of outfit, colour and size.

Just wear something that will make you feel relaxed and admired.

And of course you know you look smarter in corporate wear.

That is all we have on how to dress for a job interview.
